Hair Shedding in Minnesota: When Should You See a Trichologist?

Excessive hair shedding in a brush

You notice more hair in the shower. Then you start seeing it on your clothes, your brush, and maybe even on your pillow. Your ponytail feels smaller, or your part looks a little wider, but you are not sure if you are actually losing more hair or if you are simply paying closer attention now.

So you start searching for answers. Why am I shedding so much hair? Is this normal? Who should I see for hair loss? Where can I get my hair and scalp checked in Minnesota?

Before you buy another supplement, change your shampoo, or start a treatment you saw online, there is a much better place to start: figure out what kind of hair loss you are actually dealing with. Hair shedding and gradual thinning can look similar at first, but they are not always the same thing. And that difference can completely change what you do next.

Hair Shedding Can Start Months After the Trigger

One of the most confusing things about hair shedding is that your hair does not always react immediately to what is happening in your body.

An illness, surgery, major stress, rapid weight loss, hormonal change, medication change, or nutritional issue may happen first. Your hair can appear completely normal for weeks. Then, two or three months later, the shedding begins.

That delay is one reason people often struggle to connect the dots. They are looking at what happened this week, when I may be more interested in what was happening a few months ago.

When I work with someone experiencing excessive hair shedding, the timeline matters. When did the shedding begin? What happened before it started? Was there an illness? A major life change? Weight loss? A new medication? A hormonal shift?

Sometimes the timeline gives us a very strong clue. But it is only one part of the picture.

Are You Actually Shedding More Hair, or Is Your Hair Becoming Thinner?

This is an important distinction, and most people do not know how to tell the difference.

With increased shedding, you may suddenly notice much more hair coming out when you wash, brush, or run your hands through your hair. With gradual thinning, you may not notice a dramatic increase in shedding at all. Instead, you may begin to notice a widening part, more scalp showing through, less density around the front or crown, or a ponytail that does not feel as full as it used to.

And sometimes both are happening.

A person can experience a large shedding event while also having another type of hair loss developing underneath it. That is why when someone tells me, “My hair never came back after that big shed,” I do not automatically assume the shedding was the entire problem.

I want to look closer.

When Should You See a Trichologist for Hair Shedding?

A trichologist specializes in hair and scalp health. You do not have to wait until you have significant hair loss to have your hair and scalp evaluated.

You may want to see a trichologist if you are noticing more shedding than usual, gradual thinning, a widening part, changes in density, increased breakage, scalp irritation, itching, flaking, excessive oil or buildup, scalp tenderness, changes in hair texture, or hair loss that simply does not make sense to you.

At Tabitha F Hair in Plymouth, Minnesota, I do not start by asking which treatment you want to try. I start by asking what changed.

That may lead us into your health history, medications, nutrition, stress, hormonal changes, family history, recent illness, surgery, weight changes, or hair care practices. The goal is to understand the pattern before deciding what your hair needs.

Because if we do not understand what we are looking at, we are still guessing.

What Does a Trichologist Look At?

I look at more than the hair on top of your head.

During a hair and scalp evaluation, we may talk about your shedding timeline, family history, recent illnesses, medications and supplements, nutrition, stress levels, hormonal changes, weight changes, scalp symptoms, and changes in your density or hair texture.

Then we look directly at the scalp and hair.

I use dermascope imaging to magnify the scalp, follicles, and hair shafts. This allows me to see details that are difficult or impossible to see with the naked eye. We can look at density, differences in hair diameter, scalp condition, follicular changes, buildup, irritation, and other clues that may help us better understand what is happening.

Sometimes what looks like simple shedding from across the room looks very different once we start examining the hair and scalp up close.

And sometimes what I see tells me that we need more information.

Why I Do Not Start With a Hair Growth Treatment

This is one of the biggest things I want people to understand about hair loss.

I do not believe in picking a treatment first and figuring out the problem later.

A supplement may make sense for one person and make no sense for another. A topical treatment may be appropriate for one type of hair loss but not another. A scalp treatment can help improve the scalp environment, but that does not automatically address why someone is losing density.

And shampoo? Shampoo can be wonderful for the scalp, but it cannot fix every cause of hair loss.

Think of your hair like the dashboard light in your car. The light tells you that something changed, but it does not tell you exactly what happened. You still have to look under the hood.

That is what the evaluation is for.

The Scalp Health Scan

The Scalp Health Scan includes a 45-minute appointment plus a 30-minute follow-up.

This is a good starting point if you are thinking, “Something has changed with my scalp or hair and I want someone to take a look.”

During the Scalp Health Scan, we take an up-close look at your scalp and hair for signs of buildup, irritation, scalp imbalance, shedding, thinning, or other changes that may need attention. You leave knowing what I am seeing and what your next step should be.

Sometimes the next step is simple. Sometimes what we find tells us that we need to look deeper.

The Full Picture Consultation

The Full Picture Consultation includes a 90-minute appointment plus a 30-minute follow-up.

This consultation is for someone who is thinking, “I have been dealing with shedding or thinning for a while, and I want to understand what may be contributing.”

This is where we look beyond the scalp and dig deeper into your health history, nutrition, medications, stress, hormonal changes, family history, timeline, and hair and scalp findings. The Full Picture Consultation also includes hair microscopy and nutritional analysis, along with a personalized plan based on what we find.

The goal is not to run every test possible. The goal is to collect the pieces that actually matter and use them to build a more thoughtful plan.

You Do Not Have to Try Everything First

One of the most common things I see is someone coming in after they have already tried everything.

They changed shampoos. Bought supplements. Started a serum. Stopped the serum. Tried rosemary oil. Started minoxidil. Read a hundred different opinions online.

And months later, they still do not really know what is happening.

Your first step does not have to be another treatment.

It can simply be, let’s take a closer look.
